BS 7950 is the British Standard for the manufacture of windows with enhanced security. This standard starts by specifying that the windows have to comply with BS 7412. It then goes further to specify the security hardware and construction methods to be used and adopted. Samples are tested by BSI 4 times a year to ensure compliance with the standard. These tests include a mechanical locking point strength test using hydraulic rams to replicate a forced entry and a manual intervention test using various burglary tools. The window must successfully resist these sustained attacks for a period of 3 minutes.
SECURED BY DESIGN is a police initiative designed to encourage the building industry to adopt crime prevention measures in the development, design and refurbishment of residential and commercial property.
